What can I say...my brother wrote this book so I am perhaps a bit unfairly biased in thinking that it is wholly wonderful. The monsters in this book stick with you in a manner I have not experienced since watching Human Centipede. Perhaps the best analogy I can muster is to Chuck Palahniuk's Haunted- particularly the story where the boy loses his entrails in the pool filter. Poignant, visceral, meaty, and delightfully grotesque! I highly recommend this book to any horror aficionado. Several of the stories (vignettes rather) would not fit into a horror category per se but were beautiful all by themselves in their representation of the human condition. Having met the people mentioned in the non-fiction stories I was in tears and believe I would have been had I not known the individuals mentioned. Perhaps the only criticisms I can muster have to do with the flow and that my brother needs an editor- haha. I discovered a few typos which distracted me at times and found some of the latter stories to flow more successfully and brilliantly than earlier stories. I could have read an entire book of related shorts taking place in and around the small town of "Enoch". Lastly, some of the stories could be great jumping off points for entire novels and I hope they become such- I found myself feeling somewhat cheated at times like being left at the end of a great cliff hanger with no promise of a future episode- so unfair. Please read my brothers book as I believe there are many great words to come from this aspiring author and this is a great jumping off point!

I Held My Breath as Long as I Could Kristopher Kelly 9781466404878 Books Reviews

This is a great off the wall writer. Stories make a weird kind of sense. I would like to have more of these, love the way this guys mind works.
I Held My Breath as Long as I Could, Kelly's first collection of short stories focuses on horror, but also includes coming of age stories and touching ones from the author's own life.

The horror stories stopped me in my tracks and I was forced to abandon some in the vain hope that they wouldn't provoke nightmares. So if you like to get the bejesus scared out of you, by all means dig in.

On the other hand, if you enjoy personal stories about relationships gone well, and gone bad, you'll find some juicy bits toward the end of this volume.

A great first start. I hope to see lots more, soon.
I've always been a fan of short stories, and this book has some good bits but also some boring ones. To me it seemed as though these were daydreams that get expanded slightly into stories.
I really enjoy this author's writing. I hope he continues in this craft. Short stories are a pleasure and often overlooked. It is a shame. A bit of on the edge stories - some went off the edge, all well written. If you like stories that are a bit different, try not to miss this.
These stories just are not in my taste. The reader must be ok with a story just ending. I didn't finish the book, but none of the stories I read had a satisfying (read everything wrapped up) ending. And sometimes, I wasn't even sure where the story was going.
Extremely dark and heavy subject matter in this book, but I loved every second of it. I hope Kelly delivers more of the same in future books, because I am completely hooked! Beautiful and grotesque at the same time is a hard act to pull off, but Kelly does it again and again in this collection of twisted stories. I don't even like monster stories and absolutely loved the ones contained in this book! Thank you, Kristopher Kelly, for creating an amazing book that I will be reading many times over.
Such a disturbing read! And that is high praise ) 4.5 stars!

There are scary stories, then there are stories that are listed as horror because something supposedly scary happens, but never really is and then... There are those stories that are disturbing and horrifying even without being gory or necessarily scary.

Kelly manages to take an (almost) all-round look at what "horror" means - from the blood and gore, to the frightening things our minds can do all on their own and all the way around to the horror of losing someone dear to us or suddenly realising that we are stuck in a life we never wanted and detest, but somehow cannot seem to free ourselves from...

I must admit that when I first got to the "non-fiction" part of the book after having gone through even physical reactions (I was not able to finish my lunch while reading, which pretty much never happens) to the more bloody horror of the first parts of the book, I thought that Kelly had made a mistake in wanting to seemingly just publish all and any short story he'd written. The heartfelt story of a chess game seemed somehow out of place in the middle of all the horror... Until it dawned on me that it was exactly that horror. Only this time in a more real-life and tangible sense - the kind of horror that each of us are likely to come across in our daily lives... Which made the book jump from being a good bunch of creepy stories, to being an amazing collection of horror stories.

Well done! I look forward to seeing what Kelly comes out with next )
