An equally enjoyable follow-up to the first book in the series, which introduced readers to the very memorable Lady Isabel Wilde. Holly West weaves another intricate web in Mistress of Lies, with a colorful cast of characters and the page-turning pace of a thriller. It will appeal to readers interested in historical fiction, as West paints a vivid scene of 17th-century London, and it will satisfy those seeking the twists and turns of an accomplished mystery. And then there is the main character, the unique and endlessly interesting Lady Wilde. She’s a woman who takes control of her own fate in a time when many women couldn’t. Part fortune teller, part mistress of the king and for the breadth of each of West’s novels, part amateur detective. Looking forward to the next adventure in this wonderful series.Product details

Mistress of Lies Mistress of Fortune Book 2 edition by Holly West Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
The second book Mistress of Lies was better than the first in my opinion. You could read the second book first if you want because it does not take away from this books plot, but you might feel like you are missing something like characters history and development from the first book. Still the second book is good and introduces a new character who I liked, Susanna. The fact that the romance wasn't the main focus of the book does not take away from its attraction. The plot of this one was great because the lead character mistress Ruby tries to solve a current murder mystery as well as her brothers 12 year old murder. I am now addicted to these historical mysteries that are filled with interesting characters and captivating plots.
“Life is for the living, Isabel. Let the dead rest.”
If only Isabel could. Mistress of Lies finds Isabel searching for the truth and possibly even her brother this time around. After a beggar girl named Susanna Barber approaches her and announces that she is the twelve year old daughter of Isabel’s brother Adam, Isabel isn’t sure what to believe. Especially since she thought he died of the plague several years beforehand. Making things even more complicated, Susanna claims that her father didn’t die of the plague, but was murdered. Curiosity ends up getting the best of her and she attempts to dig deeper into Adam’s past. But the more she looks into things, the more questions she begins to have and it doesn’t take long for trouble to find her...
I enjoyed learning more about Isabel’s family. She is still as strong and determined as ever. Even after surviving an attack a few months earlier and trying to stay afloat when her business is dwindling, she refuses to give up. There aren’t a lot of women who would attempt to make it on their own she like has done.
I thought Mistress of Lies was a great continuation in the Mistress of Fortune series. There is a good amount of background and history of goldsmiths and banking during that time period, which was interesting to discover. I found the story moved quickly and there was always something going on. This series is great for lovers of historical fiction mysteries.
**I received this book as part of the Mistress of Lies Blog Tour.**
Lady Isabel Wilde was infamous for being one of King Charles' mistresses in London. What the people didn't know about her, however, was that she had another identity that enabled her to know their deepest and darkest secrets. She disguised herself as Mistress Ruby, a soothsayer/psychic/fortune-teller at night. One day, a little girl named Susanna Barber stepped on her threshold and told her that she was her long-lost niece, the daughter of her dead brother Adam. Isabel learned from her niece that she came from America after her mother died, and declared that her father Adam did not die because of plague, but because he was murdered. This piece of information distraught Isabel, and so she began investigating her brother's death.
However, things turned nasty and complicated when Susanna escaped and was soon seen collaborating with a crook. Although Isabel had doubts about the authenticity of Susanna's story, she soon unraveled a mystery that would eventually destroy the reputation of his own brother and the woman who bore his child.
This is the second book in the Mistress of Fortune series. This is a totally new experience for me, reading a Holly West story since I haven’t read any of her books, but I'm glad to say that I enjoyed Mistress of Lies immensely. Although I had no idea of Lady Isabel Wilde's past, how she became one of the King's mistresses and all that, the second book provided enough information about her so I didn't feel I was deprived or I've missed out a lot. I was impressed by West's writing as it was detailed and engaging.
Mistress of Lies is a really promising book, with a protagonist hell bent on taking the matters into her hands, just to be able to learn the whole truth. Not only did it tackle stories about the plague and consumption, love and family, the book also took on the subjects of whorehouse entities as well as goldsmithing. I also loved that this wasn't a love story of sorts, but it's more of a story full of intrigue and mystery, gritty and action-packed. This is the kind of genre many people enjoy including me. A highly recommended read!
NOTE I was provided an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
